Cleaning Air Ducts

Some folks think that they can clean their own air ducts. Chances of that are very small. Yes, you can vacuum the register covers and even remove them and stick your shop vac hose in the vent. At best you will get a few feet in and get some of the debris out but you have not cleaned the whole duct.
Duct cleaning services can seem expensive, but if you take that cost and divide it by 7 or 10, which is the average time needed between cleanings, it is not that bad. Plus you will have better ventilation and breath cleaner air.
The specialized equipment such as used by John's Duct Cleaning, is not generally available to consumers.
When contacting a duct cleaning service, cheapest is not always the best so do some research.
John's Duct Cleaning will come out for an inspection, and using a camera, together we can see what is in your ducts on a TV monitor. After you see what lurks in your ducts we let you make the decision of if you want them cleaned, no pressure sales from us. In fact, you do not have to make that decision right then, we let you think about it.

Duct Cleaning

I am changing it up a little today to share something you may not know too much about –Duct Cleaning. Yes, the ducts in your house have to be cleaned from time to time. I recently contacted an expert in the field of HVAC and duct cleaning and found a wealth of information. Hence, the reason I want to share the answers from some of the questions I had. I think this is a topic most people do not know much about until they come across it in passing at your local home store or someone approaches you about cleaning your ducts. I found some very beneficial information, which I had not realized and this is why I wanted to share it with you.
This expert I speak of has many years of experience in the HVAC industry and has his own business cleaning residential ducts. If you are local to Pewaukee, WI, I highly recommend getting your ducts checked out (inspection first) by John Campbell of John’s Duct Cleaning.
See his website for more info and services he can offer you!
Why Duct Cleaning – Why clean my Air Ducts?
What if I told you there are trillions of allergens finding their way into your home every day? Crazy, right…Well you can combat these allergens by keeping your ducts clean. Duct cleaning is a way to reduce the sources of contaminants in your air that could trigger adverse health conditions.
Think about the last time you did a little spring cleaning around your house. You move the couch and find an inch of dust that has built up over the past year. This same dust accumulates in your air ducts. Do you have pets? This accumulated dust has just become a breeding ground for fungi and dust mites. This can all lead to or is linked to the aggravation of allergies and asthma. This is important to think about especially if you own a previously-owned home…did they have pets?
Clean air ducts are more efficient. This is reason enough to consider duct cleaning. Your house will heat and cool more efficiently and maybe save you on your utility bills.
How Often should Duct Cleaning be done?
This is the million dollar question. There is no real standard out there because it really depends on the conditions in your house. Knowing what your already know from above, you may want to get your air ducts cleaned quite often. Here’s your answer…Get your ducts inspected by a professional like John.
Check out John’s site and contact him to see what he can offer you!http://johnsductcleaning.com/contact.html
Do you own a new home? Well you might want to get your ducts inspected for accumulation of construction dust. I never thought about this, but I do know there is a lot of drywall dust left behind from builders when your move into a newly built home. Once you have your ducts cleaned or inspected after building that house of your dreams, an inspection should be done every 6-10 years.
How do I know I need Duct Cleaning?
There are a few things you may be able to do yourself. One thing you can check first is if your ducts are exposed – maybe in your basement. Then check for gaps in your ducts. Gaps will indicate unconditioned air is both entering and escaping your ducts. Check the gaps and joints for dust or dirt accumulated. This is a good indication you may have to get your ducts cleaned. This will also affect how efficiently you are heating and cooling your home. Get these gaps fixed!
Who do I contact for a Duct Cleaning?
If you are in the Pewaukee, Wisconsin area, call John! He will give you honest advice specific to your home.
Here are some guidelines when looking for someone to clean your ducts.
1.       Look for someone who will do an inspection before the work. This will let you know if you need to have you ducts cleaned for sure. You should be able to look over their shoulder and see the results of their inspection.
2.       Find out how long the duct cleaning process will take and how they will do it.
3.       Get a quote for the work to be done. On average (depends on the size of your home) you can expect to pay in the range of $400-$1000 to have your ducts cleaned professionally.
These are a few questions and guidelines you can use to help you understand when and how to get your ducts cleaned. The benefits of a professionally cleaned duct system impact the overall health of your home in efficiency and the overall impact of your family’s health. We breathe air everyday – make sure it is clean!

Dryer Vents and IAQ

Dryer vents that are not properly maintained can lead to Indoor Air Quality issues.
Dryers have a tendency to shake, rattle and even bounce around a bit. All of that can cause your vent to become loose, perhaps even fall off, which means all of the "Drying" air is being released into your indoor air.
Also, because a dryer removes moisture from clothes there is a possibility of mildew and mold buildup. The lint that is produced from drying clothes is also somewhat heavy and can accumulate anywhere along the way in the dryer vent, which overtime not only increases the possibility of those building up, but constricting air flow, which increases drying time, reduces your units efficiency but also can be a fire hazard.
Dryer vents service is one of the things that John's Duct Cleaning can do for you. It is suggested that a dryer vent cleaning be done on an annual basis at least.
Someone once said," An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Air Purification

An article in the local newspaper touched on how local school districts are using air purifiers to sanitize their classrooms. I am all for that but it appears as if the systems they are utilizing are only effective if the space remains unused. This nice until the 1st person enters the room.
The air purifiers John's Duct Cleaning sells remain effective in removing the airborne contaminants continually even in occupied spaces.
Statistics show up to a 15% reduction in absenteeism using air purification continually.
If you are, or know anyone that is a teacher or works in a daycare or an environment where people gather where germs etc. can be spread uncontrollably have them, or yourself, contact John's Duct Cleaning to see how we can help.
Air purification is ALWAYS important but even more so in the winter months as fresh outdoor air is not as abundant do to not opening windows and doors to air out a facility.
Purifiers available are also suited for residential usage, keeping your home fresh as well and free of contaminants in the air as well as surfaces.

Unwind

Well January is here, well almost 1/2 over and we seemed to have made it through the cold blast from the polar Vortex.
Everybody needs to get away or have some downtime so I have taken advantage of some warming to do just that.
Whether you have had your homes ductwork, dryer vent, ductwork sealed or have an air purifier from John's Duct Cleaning, it was just nice to get out into the fresh air and relax, which I have been doing by ice fishing. Even though I dislike the cold, it is refreshing.
February is a great time to contact us, John's Duct Cleaning at www.johnsductcleaning.com, to schedule your homes duct inspection before the spring rush, to get your no obligation quote, for cleaning come Spring.
March will start the booking process for the cleaning of the ductwork. Of coarse at anytime in the year we can talk air purifiers and dryer vent cleaning, which should be done at least annually.
Also March John's Duct Cleaning will be at Lake Country Community Fest on the 29th. This is a 1 day event and free to the public. This would be a great chance to meet us and ask questions about the indoor air quality of your home.
As a friendly reminder, if you have not checked the condition of your furnace filter, now would be a goodtime and replace if need. John's Duct Cleaning can help with that as well.
Remember, just kick back and relax now and then.

Dryer Vents

Much like the ducts in your home, your dryer vent is also overlooked.
Cleaning the lint trap/filter helps but the vent tube also can accumulate lint.
Dryer vent fires are a huge problem.
John's Duct Cleaning, serving, but not limited to Waukesha, Milwaukee, Jefferson and Washington counties will come out, inspect and clean that vent as needed.
While we are there John's Duct Cleaning can also do an inspection, with no obligation, of your homes ducts.
A clean dryer vent will also make your unit work more efficiently.
